Author bio
Ken Lozito was born in 1974 in Lindenhurst, New York, and grew up with a deep love of science fiction and fantasy. Books mattered, but so did movies and games, especially the kind that opened a door into another world. Later he studied English and Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, which gave him both a feel for story and a curiosity about how people build cultures, myths, and systems.
He started writing young.
As a teenager and then in college, Lozito wrote stories and toyed with the idea of becoming an author. Still, like a lot of people who love books, he did not yet see writing as a practical career. That changed in 2013, when he decided to make a serious push and finish a manuscript he had started years earlier. Around the same time, he was learning more about self-publishing and realized there was a real path forward if he treated writing like work, not just a dream.
That practical streak shows up a lot in his career story. Before he wrote full time, Lozito worked in IT security for nearly twenty years. He has said he even wrote out a business plan before making the jump, because this was not a romantic leap into the unknown, it had to pay the mortgage. He published his first books in 2013 and, after several years of steady work, moved to writing full time in 2017.
His early fantasy books introduced readers to Safanar, beginning with Road to Shandara and continuing through Echoes of a Gloried Past and the later Broken Crown novel Haven of Shadows. But he is best known for science fiction, especially Genesis, the opening book of the long running First Colony saga. That series starts with humanity trying to build a life on a distant world and grows into something much larger, with alien mysteries, military pressure, and hard choices about survival.
He has built out other corners of his fiction, too. Star Shroud kicks off the Ascension series with a hacker, a NASA pilot, and a hidden alien signal. Acheron Inheritance opens the Federation Chronicles in a postwar galaxy full of broken machines and old dangers. Space Raiders leans more toward rough-and-ready adventure. Across those books, readers usually know what they are getting: clean setups, strong momentum, loyal crews, and characters who keep going even when the situation turns ugly.
He writes big stories, but he tends to keep the human problem in the center.
That is part of why recurring themes in his work feel consistent. He likes first contact, colonization, exploration, redemption, and people who are forced to decide what they are willing to risk for others. He has sold more than a million books, but the day to day picture of his life still sounds grounded. He lives in the Philadelphia area with his family, and when he is not writing he has said he enjoys reading, off-roading in his jeep, time at the beach, playing with the dog, and binge-watching shows.
