Ascension (Ken Lozito) Books in Order

Ascension begins much closer to home than some of Lozito's other big series. In Star Shroud, hacker Zack Quick stumbles into evidence of a hidden alien signal, while pilot Kaylan Farrow is tied to Earth's most advanced spacecraft, the Athena. Once those two threads meet, the story shifts from near-future conspiracy into first contact, deep space travel, and the unsettling idea that humanity has been part of a much bigger story for longer than anyone realized.

Home stops feeling safe very quickly.

One of the nice things about this series is the way it keeps two kinds of tension running at once. Far from Earth, Zack, Kaylan, and the Athena crew are stranded in unfamiliar star systems, dealing with damaged systems, strange species, and a war they barely understand. Back closer to home, Earth itself is no longer protected by ignorance. Hostile powers exist, ancient technology matters, and every delay in the field could make the human situation worse. That split keeps the books feeling both expansive and urgent.

As the series moves through Star Divide, Star Alliance, Infinity's Edge, Rising Force, and Ascension, the scale grows but the story stays rooted in the same questions. Who can the crew trust? How much risk is reasonable when whole worlds are at stake? What do humans owe to allies who are fighting their own losing battles? The Boxans, Xiiginn, Confederation, and the mystery surrounding the Star Shroud all add layers to the conflict, but the core appeal is still the crew trying to think their way through impossible circumstances.

This is first-contact space opera, but it has a practical streak. The books care about ship problems, chain of command, communication failures, and the simple reality that people stranded far from home cannot solve everything with courage alone. At the same time, there is a solid sense of wonder running through the series. Alien signals, lost histories, psychic links, and old galactic wars all keep the setting feeling larger than the immediate firefight.

If you like starship crews, escalating alien politics, and series that start with a clear mystery and keep paying it off in bigger ways, Ascension is an easy recommendation. It really does work best in order, beginning with Star Shroud. By the final book, a lot of the satisfaction comes from seeing how far both the crew and Earth have been pushed since that first discovery.
