Series background & context

Fake Boyfriend is the series that built much of what readers now think of as the King Sports universe. Set mainly in the world of professional baseball, football and hockey, the books follow players and the people orbiting them as fake relationships turn inconveniently real.

Fake Out opens with Maddox, who once told his small town he was gay to escape the pressure of marrying his childhood sweetheart. Years later he is straight, or so he thinks, until he hires Damons brother in law as a pretend boyfriend for a wedding and chemistry throws every old certainty out the window.

In Trick Play, a bad photo at a gay bar blows up NFL player Matts career, and Damon suggests a PR friendly fake relationship with rich boy Noah. What starts as image rehab becomes an exploration of internalised fear, family politics and the cost of living a lie in public. Deke, Blindsided and Hat Trick continue to build out the circle of friends, mixing teammates who cannot keep their hands off each other, second chances with rock stars and best friends whose feelings have quietly shifted over years.

Final Play serves as a capstone, bringing most of the couples together for one big group trip and handing side characters the closure they have earned. Novellas and extras like Fake Boyfriend Breakaways and Winning You add shorter stories and bonus scenes, fleshing out side pairings and giving more time with fan favourites.

Across the series, sports are important but never the whole story. Injuries, trades and contracts matter, yet the focus stays on the emotional stakes, coming out, career changing decisions, and how hard it can be to trust that someone is with you for more than your public image.

Fake Boyfriend also introduces Damon King and the King Sports agency, which later gets its own series. Reading in order from Fake Out through to Final Play lets you watch that expansion happen naturally and makes later crossovers in other books much more satisfying.

If you like fake dating, big gestures, and a whole lot of queer athletes finding their people, this is the series to start with.
