Face Offs and Cheap Shots

2020

Series background & context

CU Hockey drops you into a college program in Vermont where the hockey team looms large on campus, but the biggest drama is often happening off the ice. Co written by Eden Finley and Saxon James, the series mixes familiar tropes with a strong emotional throughline about identity, friendship and growing up.

The first book, Power Plays and Straight A's, pairs a star player who cannot stay out of trouble with the overworked resident advisor and tutor who is supposed to keep him on track. What starts as an arrangement built on necessity turns into late night study sessions, quiet confessions and the slow realisation that neither of them is quite who everyone thinks.

Face Offs and Cheap Shots digs into a former friendship gone sour, forcing two teammates who can barely be civil to share close quarters again. Their history makes the banter sharper and the eventual softening between them all the more satisfying. As the series continues with Goal Lines and First Times, Line Mates and Study Dates and Puck Drills and Quick Thrills, different players step forward, bringing in demisexual representation, first time experiences, and relationships that grow out of tutoring, housemate agreements and ill advised bets.

Across all five books, the team itself feels like a character. There are shared houses, team dinners, group chats and a constant sense that someone is always listening from the next room. Characters work through coming out, family expectations, academic pressure and the fear of what happens to their friendships when college ends.

The tone is what many readers look for in new adult romance, big feelings, bad decisions, laughter in between. The steam level is high, but the stories make room for quieter conversations about labels, consent and pacing, especially when one character is less experienced or questioning.

While each book focuses on a different couple, CU Hockey is at its best when read in order, starting with Power Plays and Straight A's. That way the background arcs and friendships build naturally, and when these characters show up again later in Puckboys or other corners of the Sadenverse, you will know exactly where they came from.
