Author bio
Fabian Nicieza was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 31, 1961, and moved to the United States with his family when he was four. He grew up in central New Jersey, first in Sayreville and then in Old Bridge, and he has often said that comics helped teach him to read and write in English. That detail feels fitting. His career would end up rooted in the same medium that helped shape him as a kid.
He stayed close to home for college and graduated from Rutgers University in 1983 with a degree in advertising and public relations. Before comics took over, he worked in book publishing at Berkley. Then, in 1985, he made the jump to Marvel, first on the business side and then in promotions and advertising. While doing that day job, he started writing on the side.
That side job did not stay small for long.
His first published comics story appeared in Psi-Force in 1987, and a few years later he landed the series that really put his voice on the map, New Warriors. Readers responded to the speed, the humor, and the way he could keep a large cast moving without losing the people inside the costumes. From there he became one of the key writers of Marvel's 1990s line, working on X-Men, X-Force, Cable, Thunderbolts, and later Cable & Deadpool.
He is also closely tied to the creation of some of Marvel's best-known characters. Working with Rob Liefeld, Nicieza helped create Deadpool, Shatterstar, and Domino, and he wrote the dialogue that gave Deadpool much of the voice readers still recognize. That mix of wisecracks, self-awareness, and real damage underneath the jokes became a huge part of the character's appeal.
If you read across Nicieza's comics, a few patterns show up again and again. He likes teams under pressure. He likes bickering allies who still have to save each other. He likes fast-moving plots, but he also likes the emotional mess that comes with power, loyalty, and bad decisions. That is true in Thunderbolts, where ex-villains keep trying to act like heroes, and it is true in Cable & Deadpool, where a grim future soldier and a chaos agent somehow become one of Marvel's great odd couples.
Then he took a turn into crime fiction.
His first novel, Suburban Dicks, came out in 2021 and introduced Andie Stern, a former FBI profiler turned suburban mother, and Kenneth Lee, a disgraced local reporter. Set in New Jersey, the book mixes murder, social tension, and very sharp humor. It was nominated for an Edgar Award for Best First Novel by an American Author. He followed it with The Self-Made Widow, bringing the same investigators back for another knotty suburban case.
Outside comics and novels, Nicieza has also worked in story and franchise development for entertainment companies, and he spent years consulting on larger narrative worlds beyond the page. Even with all that, his career still feels tied to the same simple engine that started it: a kid who loved comics, learned from them, and then got to help make a lot of them.
These days he still has deep New Jersey roots, and that feels right too. For all the capes, time travel, and cosmic chaos, his best work usually comes back to people, personality, and the trouble that starts when flawed characters try to do the right thing.
