Expeditionary Force Mavericks Books in Order

Expeditionary Force: Mavericks steps away from the bridge of the Flying Dutchman and drops into the mud with the soldiers left behind on Paradise. It is a shorter, focused spin off that shows what the wider war looks like to human troops who do not have Skippy on speed dial.

After the early Expeditionary Force books strand a large UN force on the alien controlled world nicknamed Paradise, those survivors are drafted into an alien legion that does the dirty work the high tech species prefer to outsource. Human companies are valuable because they are adaptable, expendable, and, in the eyes of their new employers, deniable.

In Deathtrap, the first Mavericks novel, Major Emily Perkins leads a mixed human and alien unit on what is supposed to be a straightforward mission to clear an enemy presence off an unimportant planet. Hidden agendas, incomplete intel, and a creeping sense that no one is telling the full truth quickly turn the operation into something far more lethal.

The sequel Freefall raises the stakes further, with the Alien Legion assigning the Mavericks to a plan that has them working both with and against the same foe. Perkins and her people are caught between competing masters, forced to improvise under fire when careful planning collapses and alliances shift mid battle.

Compared to the mainline ExForce novels, the Mavericks books lean harder into small unit tactics, field improvisation, and the day to day grind of soldiers who know they may never see home again. There is still humor and banter, but the focus is firmly on infantry level action and the moral compromises that come with being a rented gun.

Reading Mavericks alongside the core series fills in what is happening on the ground while Joe Bishop and Skippy chase galaxy scale problems. You see the same client patron hierarchy from a different angle, and the choices made in these books echo back into later Expeditionary Force volumes as human and alien veterans cross paths again.
