Series background & context

Ascendant is a coming of age fantasy told with Craig Alanson's straightforward voice and eye for military detail. Instead of spaceships and AIs, the series leans into wizards, royal politics, and an enemy army pressing against the borders of a kingdom.

The main thread follows Koren Bladewell, a village boy who has spent his entire life labeled a jinx. Accidents and bad luck seem to dog his steps, and even his parents fear that something is wrong with him, because the Wizard's Council has decided not to tell him the truth.

Far away in Tarador's capital, crown princess Ariana Trehayme is preparing to take the throne before her sixteenth birthday. Her mother, the regent, is cautious to the point of paralysis while an ancient enemy builds strength on their borders, and Ariana is desperate to take action before that hesitation costs them the realm.

Those two lives collide when war and sorcery tear apart Koren's old world. The Council finally admits that he is a wizard, one with unusual raw power, but their years of lies have ruined his trust. Ariana needs his help to defend Tarador, yet Koren has good reason to doubt every adult who claims to know what is best for him.

Across Ascendant, Transcendent, and Deceptions the story widens from small villages and palace corridors to battlefields and border fortresses. Koren must wrestle with his magic and the cost of using it in a war, while Ariana learns what it truly means to lead soldiers and make decisions that cannot possibly please everyone.

Compared with Expeditionary Force, the tone here is less jokey and more firmly epic, but Alanson still favors clear, modern language over ornate fantasy prose. The books pay a lot of attention to logistics, patrols, and command decisions, and they ground the magic in rules that gradually come into focus as Koren trains.

If you enjoy chosen one stories that put as much weight on difficult choices as on flashy spells, the Ascendant trilogy offers a complete arc in three volumes. It also shows another side of Alanson's writing, one where swords and staff work stand in for plasma rifles and starships.
