Author bio

Eric Brown was born in Haworth, West Yorkshire, on May 24, 1960. He spent part of his childhood in England, then moved with his parents to Melbourne, Australia, in the 1970s. He left school young and worked in the family corner shop, an everyday job that sat a long way from the futures, alien worlds, detectives, and strange possibilities that would later fill his fiction.

He began writing as a teenager in 1975. Two early reading discoveries helped point the way: Agatha Christie showed him the pleasures of a well-built mystery, while Robert Silverberg made science fiction feel like a place where big ideas could still be personal.

Brown travelled widely in his younger years, including time in Greece, India, and Australia. Those experiences stayed with him. India, in particular, became an important presence in books such as Jani and the Greater Game and the Bengal Station novels, where far-future settings carry echoes of Indian and Thai culture rather than defaulting to the same old spaceports and planets.

His first published work was the children's play Noel's Ark in 1982, but his short fiction began appearing in magazines later in the decade. The 1990 collection The Time-Lapsed Man and Other Stories brought together some of that early work. His first novel, Meridian Days, followed in 1992, beginning a career that moved easily between novels, novellas, short stories, children's books, and crime fiction.

He was a fast, practical writer who liked stories to move.

Science fiction remained at the center of his work, but Brown used it in several different ways. Helix is a large-scale survival adventure set on an immense alien-built structure of thousands of worlds. Kéthani takes a quieter route, asking how ordinary people in West Yorkshire might respond when aliens offer them immortality. The Bengal Station books, beginning with Necropath, blend telepathy, investigation, space travel, and the gradual recovery of a damaged detective named Jeff Vaughan.

He also had a fondness for compact, character-led stories. The Starship Seasons novellas follow a small community on the colony world of Chalcedony. The Virex novels, beginning with New York Nights, bring noir energy to a near-future New York shaped by virtual reality, displacement, and missing-person cases. Brown's settings could be huge, but his protagonists were often lonely people trying to make a decent choice in a difficult situation.

Mystery was never far away. In the Langham and Dupré books, he returned to the postwar England and country-house puzzle traditions he enjoyed as a young reader. Donald Langham is both crime writer and investigator, while Maria Dupré, later his wife, is an essential partner in the cases. The series gave Brown room for locked rooms, suspicious guests, old secrets, and the occasional very inconvenient corpse.

Brown won two British Science Fiction Association Awards for short fiction, and he also reviewed science fiction for The Guardian. He kept writing across forms and age groups, from brisk books for reluctant readers to playful literary adventures involving Jules Verne, G. K. Chesterton, Sherlock Holmes, and Mars.

He died on March 21, 2023, aged 62.

What remains is a large, varied shelf of fiction with a clear affection for adventure, mystery, friendship, second chances, and the sense that even a troubled future may still hold room for hope.
