Series background & context

Christine Kersey's EMP Collapse series is a post-apocalyptic survival story built around one brutal question: what happens when the power grid fails and keeps failing? The opening books follow Melissa and Alex Clark, a married couple in the Salt Lake City area, when an EMP wipes out electricity, phones, vehicles, and the basic systems modern life depends on. Melissa is stranded at work and has to make the dangerous trip home on foot. Alex is separated from her and trying to figure out whether to search for his wife or protect their children.

That first setup gives the series its heartbeat. This is not a story about lone wolves or military heroes swooping in to save the day. It is about parents, neighbors, and ordinary people forced to improvise fast while the world around them turns meaner by the hour.

Once the family is reunited, the books widen out. The danger is no longer just the trip home. It becomes the much harder work of staying alive after the first shock has passed. Streets organize their own security. Food, heat, medicine, and trust all become precious. The people next door can be allies, burdens, or threats, and sometimes they turn into all three.

That neighborhood pressure is a big part of what makes the series work. Kersey keeps the stakes close to the ground. Instead of giant battles, you get arguments over supplies, fear-driven decisions, shifting loyalties, and the constant strain of wondering who will crack first. Violence is present, but the deeper tension comes from watching social order fray one bad choice at a time.

Later books also broaden the world by bringing in Melissa's sister Heather and her husband Scott in rural Southern Utah. Their story adds a different survival angle. They are better positioned for preparedness, land, and self-reliance, but that does not make them safe. It just changes the kinds of problems they face.

So expect a family-centered survival thriller with ongoing continuity, recurring characters, and a steady climb from immediate disaster to long-term collapse. These books are about endurance, community, and the ugly compromises people consider when safety starts running out.
