Series background & context
The Dream Team books begin when Erika discovers that dreams can be far more dangerous than they seem. After a rough day, she falls asleep and ends up stranded in the Dreamscape, a strange place where nightmares are real and anxious thoughts can turn into monsters.
Luckily, she is not on her own for long. The Dream Team is a group of defenders who enter troubled dreams and help children find their way through them. Their goal is not simply to chase away monsters. They help dreamers understand the fear, anger, or nerves that gave those monsters power in the first place.
Sleep is only the start of the adventure.
In Attack of the Heebie Jeebies, Erika is surrounded by hungry Heebie Jeebies and hunted by an Angermare. Her first trip into the Dreamscape sets the tone for the series, with fast action, odd dream logic, and a problem that begins with a very ordinary bad day.
A Case of the Jitters widens the world. Erika wants her funny friend Kris to perform in the school talent show, but he is too nervous. During a new Dream Team mission, Erika meets Chanda, whose dream is under attack by the Jitters. The two situations turn out to be connected, and Erika has to work out how confidence can grow.
The books are illustrated chapter adventures for readers who enjoy monsters and missions but also like stories with something real underneath. The Dreamscape can be silly, spooky, colorful, and unpredictable, while the school and friendship problems stay recognizable.
Start with Attack of the Heebie Jeebies. It introduces Erika, the Dream Team, and the rules of this dream world. Then move straight on to A Case of the Jitters, which keeps the adventure going while showing another way fear can get in the way.
