Series background & context
Tom Percival's Big Bright Feelings books are picture books about emotions that can be hard for young children to explain. Each story starts with an everyday problem, then gives the feeling a clear, visual form that children can recognize and talk about.
The first book, Perfectly Norman, follows Norman after he grows a pair of wings. He loves them, but worries that other people will think he is strange. In Ruby's Worry, Ruby discovers a Worry that starts small and grows when she keeps it to herself. The stories make room for fear and uncertainty, but they don't treat those feelings as something shameful.
Big feelings are normal.
Later books explore anger, friendship, change, jealousy, honesty, disappointment, and shyness. Ravi becomes tiger-like when frustration takes over in Ravi's Roar. Meesha wants friends but cannot work out how to make them in Meesha Makes Friends. Tilda faces a world that suddenly feels upside down in Tilda Tries Again, while Milo has to deal with jealousy when a new neighbor enters his friendship.
The series works because the emotional problem is always tied to a child-sized situation. A new friend, a difficult day, a mistake, or attention from other people can feel enormous when you are small. Percival lets readers see that feeling grow, then shows a possible way forward through honesty, patience, apology, or connection.
These are not instruction manuals disguised as stories. They are colorful, funny, and easy to read aloud, with characters who have room to get things wrong. Adults can use them to begin a conversation, but children can also simply enjoy the pictures and recognize a little of themselves in the problem.
The books can be read in any order because each one focuses on a different child and feeling. Starting with Perfectly Norman gives the clearest introduction to the series' warm, visual style. Ruby's Worry is a natural next choice for readers dealing with anxious thoughts, while Ravi's Roar is a useful pick for conversations about anger.
At its core, this is a series about being open, being kind, and learning that nobody has everything figured out all the time.
