Series background & context

The Dragon Ops books mash together two very reliable kid magnets, dragons and video games, then ask what happens when the game stops feeling safe. In the first book, siblings Ian and Lilli, along with their cousin Derek, get the dream invite: a chance to beta test a new immersive dragon theme park before it opens. Then the park's AI dragon, Atreus, stops playing fair.

From that point on, the series runs on game logic with real stakes. There are quests, boss fights, hidden paths, and the thrill of figuring out the rules on the fly, but there are no easy do-overs. Ian's gamer instincts matter. So do Lilli's nerve and Derek's different point of view. The books never forget that teams work best when the players do not all think alike.

No cheat codes here.

The sequel, Dragons vs. Robots, takes the idea a step further by pushing the kids into another unstable digital world, this time one filled with unfinished levels, bad bots, and a rescue mission that feels even more personal. By then the series is doing more than trapping kids in a cool setting. It is exploring what fear looks like after the first adventure, and what it means to go back in when you know exactly how bad things can get.

These are brisk middle grade adventures, especially good for readers who like tech, quests, and fast chapters. Even when the books are packed with action, they still make room for sibling friction, loyalty, and the simple pleasure of smart kids using what they know to survive something impossible.
