Series background & context
The Dowser series is the heart of the Adept Universe, built around Jade Godfrey, a half-witch, half-dragon who runs a cupcake shop in modern-day Vancouver. Jade can taste magic in chocolate and other sweets, a talent that initially seems perfect for making trinkets and desserts and staying out of trouble.
In Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic, that quiet life evaporates when dead werewolves start turning up around the city. Interference from guardian dragons, territorial werewolves, and a dangerously attractive vampire drags Jade into Adept politics and forces her to treat her magic as something more than a party trick. The early books mix cozy storefront scenes and sensory writing about food with mysteries, blood magic, and the kind of secrets that can wreck families.
As the series progresses through Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic and Treasures, Demons, and Other Black Magic, Jade grapples with the fallout of her foster sister Sienna’s descent into darkness and the expectations that come with awakening dragon blood. She learns to wield the instruments of assassination, a set of enchanted artifacts tied to the guardian dragons, all while still baking, selling jewelry, and clinging to chocolate as a small anchor in a world that keeps getting wilder.
Mid-series novels like Shadows, Maps, and Other Ancient Magic and Maps, Artifacts, and Other Arcane Magic send Jade treasure-hunting across realms, tracking magical instruments that can distort fate or kill with a touch. She juggles a reluctant role in dragon politics, a complicated romantic life, and friendships with werewolves, necromancers, and vampires who all have their own agendas. The Vancouver setting stays central, but portals, pocket dimensions, and dragon domains keep the world feeling big and strange.
Later entries such as Artifacts, Dragons, and Other Lethal Magic, Champagne, Misfits, and Other Shady Magic, and Misfits, Gemstones, and Other Shattered Magic show Jade trying to hold a life together after saving the world more than once. She plans a wedding, opens a second bakery, and tries to keep a motley crew of magical misfits safe in her city, even as elves, rival dragons, and old enemies test the limits of how nice a dowser can afford to be.
The novella collection Graveyards, Visions, and Other Things that Byte briefly shifts the narrative to characters like necromancer Mory, oracle Rochelle, and fledgling vampire Jasmine after the primary warriors fall. Their stories bridge the events of Dowser 8 and 9 and highlight how ordinary lives in the Adept Universe are altered by the big battles Jade and her allies fight.
Taken together, the Dowser books blend cozy, food-forward urban fantasy with increasingly epic stakes. Readers can expect snarky banter, intricate magic systems, slow-burn relationships, and a heroine who would really prefer to be left alone with her cupcakes but keeps choosing to save the world instead.
