Series background & context
The Amplifier series follows Emma Johnson, once known only as Amp5, a magically engineered weapon created by a shadowy group called the Collective. Raised to amplify and redirect other people’s power with a touch, she spent her youth infiltrating organizations, extracting targets, and erasing all evidence she had ever been there.
In The Amplifier Protocol, a prequel told from Emma’s point of view, the training and tightly controlled missions finally break down. The Collective turns on its own creation, forcing Emma to choose between obedience and survival. Her escape, and the makeshift family that grows around her afterward, lays the emotional groundwork for the main novels.
By Demons and DNA, Emma and her partner Christopher have carved out a quiet life on the fringes of the Pacific Northwest, hiding their magic and protecting a small circle of allies. When a drained sorcerer stumbles onto their property and old enemies track him there, Emma is pushed to stop running and confront the past that still defines her. The books lean into high-stakes confrontations, tense magical battles, and the complicated dynamics within the Five, the other amplified operatives who share her origin.
Subsequent installments escalate both the external and internal pressure. In Bonds and Broken Dreams, sorcerers arrive holding Emma’s hard-won future hostage, testing the romantic and magical bonds she has cautiously allowed herself to form. Mystics and Mental Blocks brings one of the Five to her doorstep injured and on the run, then layers in a shocking betrayal that forces Emma to question who she can trust as well as who she wants to be, Emma or Amp5, or some uneasy mix of both.
Idols and Enemies turns a simple letter from a powerful sorcerer into a lethal family reunion, complete with old grievances, magical coercion, and the kind of secrets that cannot be solved with a sword alone. Emma is terrifyingly capable in a fight, but watching her try to mediate other people’s trauma without resorting to draining their magic shows a different sort of strength.
The later novellas and novels, including Instincts and Impostors, Recon Mission: Bee, and Endings and Empathy, send Emma back into the wider world. She attends coven retreats where social politics are more daunting than demons, tracks a missing telepathic teammate to the wilds of Russia, and finally confronts the remnants of the Collective that once owned her. Across those books, the series explores trauma recovery, chosen family, and the uneasy idea that someone bred to be a sociopath might still build a life grounded in love and empathy.
Overall the Amplifier books are some of the darkest corners of the Adept Universe, thick with violence, genetic engineering, and moral compromise. But they are also about soft things, like Emma learning domestic routines, claiming joy, and slowly trusting that her power does not make her a monster. Readers who enjoy intense, action-forward fantasy with a deeply wounded but fiercely loyal heroine tend to start here or arrive quickly after Dowser.
