Series background & context

The Dove series is a three-book historical romance set in the difficult years after the American Civil War. It begins in Heart of a Dove, when Lorie Blake, a Southern orphan who has been forced into prostitution, sees a chance to escape the life imposed on her. Her path crosses with a group of men heading north, all of them carrying the damage of war and hoping to begin again.

Lorie is the heart of the story, but she is not alone for long. Boyd and Malcolm Carter, former Confederate soldiers, travel with their friend Sawyer Davis and a young boy as they try to leave old horrors behind. Their journey is practical as well as emotional: they need food, shelter, horses, safe roads, and eventually a place where they can build a home.

Nothing about that journey is simple. The war may be over, but its grudges and losses are still close. Enemies continue to pursue the group, and the people Lorie travels with must confront what they did, saw, and survived before they can imagine a different future.

This is a series where the road is never just a road.

In Soul of a Crow, Lorie and her new family push northwest with plans to settle in Minnesota as homesteaders. The book keeps the focus on their growing bonds while raising the pressure from old feuds, fresh danger, and the uncertainty of making a new life in a country still divided by the conflict. Romance matters here, but so do survival, trust, and the hard work of becoming a family by choice.

The final novel, Grace of a Hawk, follows the group as danger again closes around the Carter brothers and the people who love them. The series remains interested in redemption without pretending it comes easily. Expect frontier travel, threats from the past, strong emotional stakes, and relationships tested by distance, violence, and secrets.

Read the books in order. Each installment builds on the journeys, relationships, and unresolved conflicts of the one before it.
