Series background & context
The Shore Leave Cafe series is a contemporary romance saga about a family of women whose lives keep circling back to a lakeside diner in Landon, Minnesota. The cafe is their workplace, meeting place, and safe harbor. It is also where old hurts tend to surface, usually alongside strong coffee, family advice, and one more reason to stay when leaving seems easier.
The story opens with Summer at the Shore Leave Cafe. Joelle Gordon leaves Chicago after discovering her husband has been unfaithful and returns home with her three teenage daughters, Camille, Tish, and Ruthann. Back in Landon, she reconnects with her sister Jillian and the women who have long run the cafe. Joelle is trying to build a life as a single mother while deciding whether she can trust love again.
Family history complicates everything. The Davis women believe a curse takes the men they love, and that fear shadows new relationships throughout the series. The books are rooted in romance, but they also follow siblings, mothers and daughters, ex-spouses, friendships, and the slow work of coming home after a life changes course.
The cafe is the center of the map.
As the series continues, the focus shifts among the women of the family. Second Chances stays with Joelle as her past and present collide. A Notion of Love follows Jillian, while Winter at the White Oaks Lodge gives Camille a mystery tied to an old photograph and a nearby inn. These books work best as one unfolding family story rather than separate stand-alone romances.
Later entries broaden the setting beyond Minnesota. In The First Law of Love, Tish heads to Montana for a legal internship, and Until Tomorrow raises the stakes with a fire and unanswered questions. The final stretch, The Way Back and Return to Yesterday, brings Ruthann and Marshall into a dangerous mystery that links the family's present to an older past.
Expect emotional relationships, family secrets, small-town lake-country settings, and a growing thread of mystery and time-spanning danger. Start with Summer at the Shore Leave Cafe and read in order, since the consequences of each romance carry into the next book.
