Author bio

Donna Kauffman was born in Washington, D.C., on March 18, 1960, and grew up in Maryland. She came to romance as a devoted reader first, then as a writer who understood how much fun, comfort, and emotional lift a love story can carry.

Before she was published, she tried a few other lives. In the years before her career took off, she worked a range of jobs, including hairdressing, and even spent time in competitive bodybuilding. Then, while pregnant with her second child, she wrote Illegal Motion. That book became her debut, and it opened the door to a career that would last for decades.

She did not break in by accident.

Kauffman became deeply involved with Washington Romance Writers while living in Virginia, and that mattered. She volunteered, learned the craft side of the job, learned the business side too, and built the kind of community that helps a writer stay in the game. That mix of persistence and practical know-how helped her land an early three-book contract, and from there she kept building.

Her early books often ran hot and fast. Titles like The Legend MacKinnon, The Charm Stone, and Your Wish Is My Command show how comfortable she was mixing romance with curses, magic, time slips, and big adventurous hooks. Even when the setup got wild, the emotional center stayed familiar, two people trying to trust what they feel.

She could also go lighter when she wanted to. In The Cinderella Rules and the Glass Slipper, Inc. books, she played with fairy-tale ideas in a modern, funny way. Later, in Sugar Rush and the Cupcake Club novels, she shifted toward friendship, baking, and small-town warmth without losing the spark that made her earlier books move.

Place became one of her real strengths.

Blueberry Cove, Sugarberry Island, Hamilton, and Blue Hollow Falls all feel like towns she enjoyed spending time in. Readers who love her later books usually point to that mix of welcoming setting, slightly nosy community, and characters who arrive carrying hurts they do not always know how to name. In Pelican Point, Blue Hollow Falls, and The Inn at Blue Hollow Falls, romance is still the point, but so are second chances, useful work, and the relief of finally landing somewhere that feels like home.

In her later years she lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia, and that landscape fed directly into her fiction. She gardened, did craft projects, wrote television recaps, and volunteered to help injured or orphaned wildlife get where they needed to go. That everyday connection to place and creaturely chaos feels very on brand for the books too.

Kauffman published more than seventy novels and novellas, and her work was translated into many languages. The Charm Stone was a RITA finalist, but the bigger story is probably her range. She wrote sexy category romance, paranormal adventure, fairy-tale comedy, holiday novellas, and cozy-feeling small-town love stories, often with the same easy confidence.

She died on April 9, 2020. But reading her now does not feel like stepping into something dusty or distant. What still comes through is energy, humor, heat, and a real affection for people who are a little battered, a little stubborn, and still willing to try for love one more time.
