Series background & context

The Dollar Duchesses books lean into one of historical romance's most entertaining setups: wealthy American women crossing the Atlantic and trying to turn money into social security, status, or survival in London society. In Amanda McCabe's hands, that premise becomes less about glitter alone and more about what these women are willing to trade, and what they refuse to give up.

The series centers on the Wilkins sisters, each facing the awkward bargain behind the idea of a dollar duchess. A titled husband might solve one problem, but it creates plenty of others. McCabe uses that tension well. Her heroines are practical, lively, and often underestimated, while the dukes and aristocrats opposite them have their own blind spots, emotional baggage, or inconvenient depth.

These books are Victorian romances with bright settings, strong chemistry, and emotional stakes that go beyond the wedding. There are fake engagements, marriage-in-trouble complications, travel, and plenty of class friction. The tone stays warm and readable, but the women at the center never feel like props in someone else's society story.
