Author bio
Amanda McCabe has built a long career by taking readers somewhere vivid and a little dangerous. Sometimes that means Tudor England, sometimes Georgian Ireland, sometimes a Regency ballroom, and sometimes 1920s Santa Fe. She writes historical romance and mystery, and she has also published as Amanda Carmack, Amanda Allen, and Laurel McKee.
One detail turns up in almost every short bio because it says a lot about her. She wrote her first romance when she was sixteen, secretly during algebra class, with her friends cast as the characters. It is a funny origin story, but it also feels like a perfect one. She was already mixing imagination, history, and romance long before publication entered the picture.
That early start matters.
Over time, McCabe turned that teenage impulse into a deep backlist that moves easily across subgenres. Her books have earned award nominations, including RITA and Booksellers Best recognition, but the more useful thing to know as a reader is how wide her range is. She can write a lively Regency romance, a darker historical adventure, or a court-centered mystery without losing the warmth that makes her work approachable.
As Amanda Carmack, she wrote the Kate Haywood Elizabethan mysteries, beginning with Murder at Hatfield House. Those books follow a young court musician caught up in murder and Tudor politics, and they show how well McCabe handles intrigue without losing sight of character. As Amanda Allen, she moved into the 1920s with Santa Fe Mourning, using art, reinvention, and a striking Southwestern setting to build a more atmospheric mystery series.
Her romance work covers just as much ground. Readers who pick up The Shy Duchess, To Catch a Rogue, His Unlikely Duchess, or Countess of Scandal will find smart heroines, emotionally complicated heroes, and historical settings that do real work in the story. Courts, theaters, crumbling houses, gaming hells, foreign cities, art, espionage, and family obligation all show up again and again.
She clearly likes a little danger with the love story.
That is one of the pleasures of her books. The history never feels pasted on. Tudor pageants, Irish rebellion, Venetian glamour, Parisian society, and Jazz Age restlessness all shape the choices her characters make. Even when the tone is light, there is usually something tighter underneath it, political pressure, social risk, a family burden, or a secret that refuses to stay hidden.
Public author bios place McCabe in Oklahoma, where she lives among a lot of books and antiques, along with very spoiled pets. They also tend to mention the hobbies that fit her fiction rather well: needlework, dancing lessons, browsing antique stores, collecting travel souvenirs, and watching the Food Network.
That all feels right.
McCabe writes for readers who like texture with their romance and human feeling with their mystery. If you want historical fiction with wit, movement, and people who fall in love while navigating secrets, class rules, politics, or peril, her backlist gives you plenty of ways in.
