Series background & context

Divorced and Desperate tells you what kind of ride you are in for right from the title. These books are about women who have been through enough to be wary of love, and then Christie Craig promptly throws them into murder plots, undercover lies, protective cops, and the kind of emotional chaos they were hoping to avoid.

The early books especially have a friend-group feel. The women trade support, gossip, warnings, and hard-earned opinions about men, usually while insisting they are absolutely not getting pulled into another bad relationship. That declaration tends to last until the next detective, PI, or wounded lawman shows up in the middle of a crisis.

It is a very Craig setup, and it works.

The tone is funny, but not weightless. These stories have plenty of banter and awkward chemistry, yet there is almost always a real threat moving underneath the romance. Someone is lying. Someone is hiding who he really is. Someone may be trying to kill the heroine. The books keep that suspense thread active, which gives the relationships more pressure and more payoff.

Another thing the series does well is make starting over feel messy instead of magically empowering. These women are often bruised by divorce, betrayal, or bad choices, but they are still funny, still capable, and still willing to fight for themselves. The romances work best when they have to decide that wanting love again is not the same as giving up control of their lives.

Fresh starts can be dangerous here.

As the series continues, new couples and new cases widen the circle, but the core stays the same. Craig likes heroines who are skeptical for good reason, heroes who are confident right up until real feelings hit them, and plots where attraction has to compete with genuine danger. Add in a little Texas flavor, some comic side characters, and the occasional deeply inconvenient corpse, and you have the tone of the series.

If you want adult romantic suspense that stays lively, sexy, and just a little chaotic, Divorced and Desperate is one of the clearest examples of Christie Craig's style. Read it in order if you want to watch the larger social circle grow, but each book also carries its own couple and central problem well enough to be satisfying on its own.
