Author bio
Derek Prior is a British fantasy and horror writer whose work often begins with familiar ingredients, knights, dwarves, wizards, monsters, and then puts them under real pressure. His stories are full of dangerous magic, old grudges, uneasy friendships, and people trying to do one decent thing after making a terrible mistake.
He was born in Eastbourne, in South East England, in the late 1960s. As a child, he read fantasy and science fiction widely, along with Marvel comics. That early love of invented worlds stuck. He has said that maps became useful well beyond reading, once helping him catch a character traveling in the wrong direction during an edit.
Before focusing on fiction, Prior worked in several fields and developed experience as an editor. Since 2009, he has worked as a developmental editor as well as a writer, helping other novelists shape manuscripts in fantasy, historical fiction, horror, and related genres. It is a practical side of the job that fits his own interest in clear storytelling, strong momentum, and characters whose decisions have consequences.
The worlds have to work before the battles do.
His best-known work is set across the connected world of Aethir and its neighboring realms. The long-running Nameless Dwarf books follow a dwarf trying to live with the horror of a massacre committed while under the power of a cursed axe. Ravine of Blood and Shadow begins deep in dwarven history, while Mountain of Madness, Curse of the Black Axe, and later novels expand the story into wars, strange afterlives, monsters, and hard-won attempts at redemption.
The Shader novels take a different route into the same larger setting. In Sword of the Archon, Deacon Shader is a holy knight who would rather retreat into a life of prayer, but plague, stolen artifacts, and an ancient threat pull him back into conflict. Best Laid Plans and The Unweaving raise the stakes through warring powers, dangerous alliances, and a disaster that could undo creation itself. The shorter Ward of the Philosopher and The Seventh Horse show earlier chapters in Shader's life.
Prior also makes room for stories outside the central epic. Husk follows Jebediah Skayne, a half-human hunter of demonic creatures, through a corrupt fishing town. The Codex of Her Scars centers on Tey Moonshine, an apprentice whose scarred body carries forbidden magical knowledge. Thanatos Rising moves toward dark fantasy and horror, with postgraduate student Harry Chesterton investigating frightening mysteries around Aberystwyth.
His books tend to return to loyalty, betrayal, faith, regret, and the question of whether someone can come back from the worst thing they have done. The action is direct and often brutal, but the larger stories keep circling back to friendship and responsibility. Magic may offer power, though it nearly always comes with a bill to be paid.
Prior's work on The Nameless Dwarf: The Complete Chronicles received a best fantasy novel award in 2012, and Ravine of Blood and Shadow was a semifinalist in the 2018 Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off. He has also spoken about drawing inspiration from history, biography, fantasy, science fiction, and horror. Those influences show up in his interest in ancient empires, religious orders, myths, and people forced to keep moving through a world that has become much stranger than they expected.
