Plague Demon Chronicles Books in Order

The Plague Demon Chronicles is a dark fantasy series built around the Maresmen, hunters who track demons known as husks. These creatures cross the Farfall Mountains from nightmare territory and leave bloodshed behind them. If an incursion goes unanswered, the danger can spread far beyond one unlucky town.

The first book, Husk, introduces Jebediah Skayne. Jeb is a Maresman, but the job comes with a brutal catch: Maresmen are themselves part human and part husk. They are trained and used as weapons against the monsters, yet they are always one step away from being treated as monsters themselves. Their rule is simple, hunt husks or be hunted.

It is not a healthy workplace policy.

Jeb follows a troubling trail to Portis, a fishing town on the Chalice Sea. Something is wrong there, but it does not leave normal signs. Once he arrives, the evidence vanishes, forcing him to investigate a place already full of corruption, violence, old resentments, and people who would prefer he leave. The town has suffered incursions before, and its residents do not necessarily welcome a hunter who seems to bring danger with him.

The series has the feel of a supernatural investigation filtered through a rough frontier setting. Jeb is capable, cynical, and far from spotless. He is not a shining hero riding into town to fix everyone's problems. His mixed heritage, his hard-earned instincts, and his uncertain relationship to the Maresmen make every hunt personal.

The larger world connects to Prior's other Aethir stories, but the opening stands well on its own. There are demons, strange borders between realms, and hints of larger forces at work, yet the immediate tension comes from a hunter trying to identify an enemy hidden among ordinary people. The stakes rise as Jeb learns that the creature he is after may know more about him than it should.

Start with Husk. It establishes the Maresmen, the rules of the hunt, and Jeb's difficult place between humanity and the nightmares he is ordered to kill. The Hunter: Takes a Demon to Catch a Demon continues the demon-hunting side of this world.
