Series background & context
The Shader series follows Deacon Shader, a warrior shaped by religious duty, war, and a growing doubt about the life he has been trained to lead. Set across the Templum's empire and the connected worlds of Aethir, the books combine holy orders, assassins, plague, undead armies, ancient artifacts, and the looming threat of a disaster called the Unweaving.
Shader begins as an exceptional knight, but he is not eager for another grand cause. In Sword of the Archon, he has his own hopes for a quieter life of prayer. Then a powerful artifact is stolen from the Abbey of Pardes. As plague spreads, the dead rise, and an old evil wakes up, he becomes the person best placed to fight a crisis he never wanted.
He cannot simply walk away.
The series works because it keeps returning to the tension inside Shader himself. He is a disciplined soldier with a wavering faith, a person who understands violence too well and would rather not need it. The people around him complicate matters further. Shadrak the Unseen, an assassin with his own motives, and Rhiannon, a fierce and wounded ally, both become important parts of the larger struggle.
From Best Laid Plans onward, the story expands beyond a single stolen object. Pieces of the Statue of Eingana become central to a conflict involving the reavers, the Templum, warring cultures, and forces that could tear apart creation. Plans go wrong, allies become uncertain, and even death does not always keep a character out of the fight. The books move quickly, but the long game of the philosopher Aristodeus keeps nudging events in unexpected directions.
The setting is broad and rough-edged. Holy cities, ruined lands, dwarven ravines, remote abbeys, and the realm of the Lich Lord all have a part to play. The action is high stakes, yet the series is also interested in friendship, damaged trust, guilt, and whether faith can survive when the world keeps offering reasons to give up.
Read the main Shader sequence in order, starting with Sword of the Archon, then Best Laid Plans, The Unweaving, and The Archon's Assassin. Readers who want Shader's earlier years can begin first with the two shorter Shader Origins stories.
