Series background & context

Shader Origins is a pair of prequel novellas about Deacon Shader before the events of the main Shader novels. The stories show the pressures that formed him, from childhood training to command on a battlefield, and give readers a closer look at the empire, faith, and undead menace surrounding his later adventures.

Ward of the Philosopher starts when Shader is seven years old. Taken from his Ancient-world parents as a baby, he has been raised on the Isle of Maranore. The philosopher Aristodeus arrives to train him in the sword and the mind, convinced that the boy has a part to play in stopping the Unweaving.

That is a lot to put on a child.

The first story balances a young hero's training with a sharp external threat. Reavers approach the coast under the Impaled Man flag of Verusia, realm of the Lich Lord. The danger makes it clear that Shader's lessons are not merely academic. Aristodeus demands excellence because the world around them is already moving toward war.

The Seventh Horse picks up much later, with Shader serving as a captain in the Templum's cavalry. Verusia, long silent, suddenly shows signs of returning to war. Abandoned border forts and a massacred garrison force the empire to respond. Shader leads the Seventh Horse, a heavy cavalry troop whose members know that one well-timed charge may be their only chance to change the course of a battle.

The tone is military fantasy with horror close at hand. The enemy is not simply an army of the dead. Fear itself becomes a weapon, breaking seasoned fighters before swords ever meet. Shader's soldiers must hold their ground while he faces wounds that are not only physical.

These stories are brief but useful for readers who want to understand Shader's background before beginning the larger saga. Start with Ward of the Philosopher: Shader Origins, then read The Seventh Horse: Shader Origins. After that, Sword of the Archon carries the story into the main series.
