Series background & context

The Dee Laguerre books are mysteries with open sky, dry wind, and public-land politics in every chapter. Dee Laguerre is a Bureau of Land Management ranger working Nevada country, and Mitchell treats that job seriously. She is not a private eye dropped onto a postcard landscape. She is part cop, part land manager, part reluctant referee in arguments that were simmering long before the first body appears.

That setting is the engine of the series. Nevada's desert country is full of contested uses and competing loyalties, cattlemen, sheepherders, environmental rules, water fights, government pressure, and people who believe the land should answer to them first. Mitchell understands how a murder can grow out of those pressures. He also understands that no one in this kind of country gets to stay morally tidy for long. Everyone has a stake. Everyone has a story about why they belong.

The desert does a lot of the talking here.

In High Desert Malice, Dee returns to familiar Nevada ground and finds herself working a murder case tangled up with range wars, local history, and a suspect she knows too well. That personal pull matters. Dee is not floating above the community as a neutral observer. She is emotionally involved in the people and the place, which gives the investigation more weight and more friction. In Deep Valley Malice, the stakes widen when an environmental terrorist starts blowing up water lines to California and killing anyone who stands in the way. The mystery becomes a chase, but it stays rooted in arguments over scarcity, land use, and who pays the price for someone else's idea of progress.

What makes Dee work as a lead is that she is practical without feeling hard in a canned thriller way. She knows the country, understands the people, and keeps running into situations where the law is only one piece of the problem. Mitchell uses her to explore the uncomfortable middle ground between local custom and federal authority. That gives the books a Western flavor, but they read more like modern ecological thrillers than traditional cowboy mysteries.

This is a short series, just two books, which makes it easy to dip into. Still, it has a clear identity. If you like mysteries where landscape is inseparable from motive, where politics enters through grazing rights and water instead of speeches, and where the detective has to navigate community ties as carefully as evidence, Dee Laguerre is worth your time. These are lean, place-driven books with a strong sense of region and a real feel for the cost of living on contested ground.
