Author bio

David Pilling is a British writer and historian whose fiction spends a lot of time in the rougher corners of the past. His novels range across Roman, Arthurian, medieval, Tudor, and Civil War settings, usually following soldiers, outlaws, knights, and survivors caught in wars bigger than themselves.

He was raised on a smallholding in West Wales. The region’s castles, hills, and long memory of conflict made a lasting impression, and medieval Wales remains a regular presence in both his fiction and nonfiction.

History came first.

Pilling has written nonfiction about Edward I, Wales, the Montfort rebellion, and the Anglo-French war of 1294 to 1303. That research carries into his novels, which tend to put invented characters beside real rulers, battles, rebellions, and shifting alliances without turning the story into a textbook.

His early solo novel, Folville’s Law, introduced Sir John Swale in the closing years of Edward II’s reign. It set the pattern for much of his work: a capable but conflicted protagonist, a country under pressure, and loyalties that become harder to keep once violence starts.

The places are rarely safe.

Readers looking for medieval adventure often start with Longsword, a series set in the unsettled years after the Second Barons’ War, or Reiver, which heads to the dangerous English-Scottish border. The White Hawk moves into the Wars of the Roses, while the Robin Hood novels give the familiar outlaw legend a grittier thirteenth-century setting.

Pilling also writes beyond medieval England. The Leader of Battles books rework the struggle for Britain after Rome’s withdrawal, with Ambrosius Aurelianus at the center. Caesar’s Sword follows Coel, Arthur’s grandson, through the late Roman world. In The Champion, En Pascal of Valencia fights through the divided kingdoms of late medieval Iberia.

War, power, faith, revenge, and the cost of allegiance come up again and again. His heroes may be knights, mercenaries, farmers, or fugitives, but they are usually forced to decide what honor means when every side has blood on its hands.

He has also co-written dark fantasy with Martin Bolton in the World Apparent Tales. Those books trade documented history for a harsher invented world, though Pilling’s interest in warfare, folklore, and morally messy characters is still easy to spot.

Pilling remains based in West Wales, writing fiction and historical work rooted in the periods that first caught his attention as a child visiting old castles. His bibliography offers plenty of entry points, whether you want Romans, Plantagenets, Welsh princes, Tudor plotting, or a hard-used version of Robin Hood.
