Series background & context
Dark Arts starts as an occult World War II adventure and then keeps moving, into aftermath, espionage, and the long shadow of wartime choices. The core idea is simple and nasty: magic works, but it works by binding and commanding demonic forces. Every use of power leaves a mark.
At the center of the early books is Cade Martin, a young man pulled into the Allies' secret magical war after Nazi sorcerers destroy his family. He trains with the Midnight Front, a covert program built to fight enemy magicians on battlefields where tanks and bullets are only part of the problem. The series has action, sabotage, escapes, and battlefield tension, but it never lets you forget that every spell carries a moral cost.
That cost is what gives the books their edge.
As the series moves forward, the scope widens. Surviving wartime magicians age into Cold War operatives, old grudges harden, and buried histories keep bubbling up into public disasters. The Iron Codex and The Shadow Commission shift the story from a wartime team book into something closer to a globe-spanning supernatural spy thriller.
The tone is dark, fast, and a little pulpy in the best way. You get demons, conspiracies, motorcycles, hidden orders, and plenty of bad choices made for understandable reasons. Beneath the big set pieces, though, the ongoing question stays the same: can anyone use evil tools for good ends without becoming something worse?
