Author bio
Dan Abnett is an English novelist and comics writer whose career includes military science fiction, superhero stories, fantasy, and work for film and games. Born in Kent in 1965, he studied English at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, entering the college in 1984 and graduating in 1987. He worked as an editor of comics and children's books before turning to writing full time, gaining experience with several kinds of storytelling and audience.
Comics have remained a central part of his professional life. He has written for Marvel, DC, and the British anthology 2000 AD, working with established characters as well as helping create new series. His output crosses the boundaries between children's entertainment, superhero adventure, and science fiction for older readers. That range reflects a career built around scripts and prose rather than a single fictional setting or publishing format.
Collaboration has been a recurring part of his work.
His partnership with writer and inker Andy Lanning produced many superhero stories, including their 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy run for Marvel. That version of the team helped shape the later film series. Abnett has also written for DC characters such as Aquaman and the Legion of Super-Heroes. At 2000 AD, his credits include the long-running Sinister Dexter and other original series. These projects sit alongside his novels, rather than representing an earlier career he left behind.
For many prose readers, he is closely associated with Games Workshop's Black Library. First and Only, published in 1999, launched his Gaunt's Ghosts novels and was the publisher's first novel. The series follows ordinary soldiers of the Tanith First and Only through the wars of the Warhammer 40,000 setting. Their experiences give a vast fictional conflict a continuing cast of human participants, linking battles to the lives and relationships of the people fighting them.
His Black Library work also includes inquisitorial investigations and stories about the history of the Imperium. Xenos begins the Eisenhorn sequence, while Horus Rising opened the Horus Heresy novel series in 2006. These books approach the same broad universe from different positions, moving between investigation, military campaigning, and the origins of a galactic civil war. Abnett has returned to that setting across many books without making every story follow the same kind of protagonist.
His original fiction gives him room to build separate worlds.
Triumff imagines an alternative 2010 in which an Elizabethan empire, alchemy, and court conspiracy shape a comic adventure. Embedded follows a journalist trying to uncover the truth about a conflict on a distant colony planet. Together, they show the contrast between his humorous fantasy and his interest in war, information, and people caught inside larger struggles. They were published by Angry Robot outside his established franchise work.
Abnett's writing has also extended into games, with credits including Alien: Isolation and Shadow of Mordor. His wife, Nik Vincent, is a writer and collaborator on several projects. He lives and works in the United Kingdom, continuing a career that moves between novels, comic scripts, and other narrative media. Across those forms, his bibliography combines long-running shared worlds with stories created around new characters and settings.
