Series background & context
Gaunt's Ghosts is Dan Abnett's military science fiction series about the Tanith First and Only, a regiment fighting in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Its soldiers escaped the destruction of their home world and now serve in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. They have no home to return to. The regiment carries the memory of Tanith into every campaign, making its survival a matter of identity as well as military duty.
Their commander, Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, holds responsibility for both leadership and discipline. His men are known as the Ghosts, and their specialist scouting role repeatedly sends them into dangerous assignments. They are human soldiers within the Imperial Guard, also called the Astra Militarum. The vast scale of the setting surrounds them with armies, alien enemies, and the forces of Chaos, but the series follows the people who must carry out orders on the ground.
For the Tanith, another battle also means another test of what remains of their home.
First and Only introduces the regiment during fighting on Fortis Binary. A conspiracy against Warmaster Macaroth draws Gaunt and his soldiers into danger from their supposed allies as well as the enemy. Their place in a larger army does not guarantee support. Rivalries between regiments, distrust, and political manoeuvring complicate the immediate work of staying alive. The opening establishes a recurring tension between the crusade's stated purpose and the behaviour of those directing or serving within it.
Ghostmaker explores the regiment's beginnings and individual experiences through memories surrounding a campaign on Monthax. The soldiers become more than a unit named after its commander. Their earlier deeds and losses give the continuing war a personal history. Necropolis then places them in the defence of Vervunhive on Verghast, where a conflict between hive cities becomes a desperate siege. These opening books vary the military situation while building the relationships that connect later campaigns.
The series combines battles and missions with the life of a continuing regiment. Gaunt must weigh orders, the interests of his troops, and the demands of a wider war. His soldiers bring their own skills, grievances, loyalties, and memories into each encounter. This gives events consequences beyond the success or failure of an operation. The grim setting allows for extreme violence and supernatural threats, while the human viewpoint keeps attention on decisions, endurance, and the cost of service.
Beginning with First and Only, followed by Ghostmaker and Necropolis, introduces the regiment before its later campaigns. The opening trilogy is also collected in The Founding. Reading forward lets the cast and its shared history develop alongside the changing battlefields. Gaunt's Ghosts offers a sustained view of ordinary troops inside an immense war, with the loss of Tanith providing the emotional thread that ties its separate missions together.
