Possessed by the daemon Tz'arkan, Malus Darkblade must recover five powerful artifacts to regain his soul. This omnibus collects the opening three novels of his quest, following a ruthless dark elf through monsters, magic, and family treachery.

Series background & context

The Chronicles of Malus Darkblade follows a ruthless dark elf whose ambitions lead him into a struggle for his own soul. Set in the Warhammer fantasy world, the novels centre on Malus rather than a conventional heroic adventurer. He is cunning, treacherous, and accustomed to violence. Those qualities may help him survive among his own people, but they do not protect him when an ancient daemon takes possession of him.

The daemon, Tz'arkan, gives Malus a terrible bargain. He must recover five powerful artefacts within a single year or lose his soul forever. This demand supplies the main quest running through the early novels. A character used to pursuing wealth and influence now has an urgent personal reason to travel into danger. Every new obstacle matters because the search has both a deadline and a supernatural master whose promises are difficult to trust.

His most dangerous companion is already inside him.

The Daemon's Curse begins the sequence, followed by Bloodstorm and Reaper of Souls. Their quest takes Malus through encounters with monsters, magic, and his own kin. Tz'arkan's presence means that physical survival and freedom are different problems. Power can offer an advantage while also threatening the person who uses it. The series repeatedly places Malus between an immediate enemy and the longer danger posed by the force claiming ownership of him. His choices rarely offer the comfort of an obviously safe path.

The dark elf setting gives the search another source of tension. Malus moves through a society in which treachery and ambition are familiar tools, so returning among his own people does not end the danger. Rivals, relatives, and rulers can obstruct the quest or draw him into conflicts unrelated to the daemon's demand. Later books widen the scale to include warfare and political obligations. In Lord of Ruin, duties imposed by the Witch King compete with the urgent need to locate the remaining artefact before the allotted time expires.

Dan Abnett and Mike Lee wrote the opening novels, blending a connected supernatural quest with the violence and intrigue of the Warhammer world. The protagonist's cruelty is part of the premise, not a problem already resolved before the story begins. Readers follow a capable but destructive man whose determination makes him compelling without making him trustworthy. The tone is dark fantasy, with battles, magical threats, and betrayals forming the practical conditions of his journey rather than occasional interruptions to it.

Starting with The Daemon's Curse makes the bargain and the search clear before later developments. The first omnibus gathers that novel with Bloodstorm, Reaper of Souls, and the short story The Blood Price. The books work best as a continuing account of Malus's predicament, since each stage builds on the pressure of the same quest. Their central tension comes from a warrior seeking freedom in a world where strength, cunning, and even supernatural power may carry a price.
