The Cutler series is short, only two books, but it gives a clear look at another kind of hero Ben Haas liked to write. John Cutler is not a ranch owner, a lawman, or a hired revolutionary. He is a hunter and tracker, a big, leathery frontier professional who knows how to follow danger into bad country and finish the job. In The Wolf-Pack, the setup is simple and strong. A rogue wolf is troubling the range, and Cutler is the man brought in to deal with it. In his westerns, animal danger usually opens the door to human trouble, because fear on the frontier never stays neatly contained. A hunt becomes a wider test of endurance, judgment, and nerve.

The Gun-Hawks broadens the series. Cutler comes down from the Big Horn Mountains looking for rest and finds anything but that. The second book pulls him into a far more tangled situation involving a violent clan, a terrorized town, and men profiting from fear. There is even a man-eating jaguar in the mix, which tells you a lot about the book's willingness to blur the line between wilderness menace and outright nightmare. If the first novel is about tracking one visible threat, the second is about stepping into a place where danger has spread through everything.

That is really what the Cutler books do best. They treat the frontier as a hunting ground where the prey is not always obvious. Sometimes it is a wolf. Sometimes it is an outlaw gang. Sometimes it is the whole rotten system a town has been forced to live under. Cutler's skill set, patience, physical toughness, and willingness to keep going when other men would turn back, makes him a natural guide through those situations.

The style is pure Haas, quick scenes, blunt violence, and very little wasted motion. Cutler is not a talker, and these books are not interested in dressing him up with unnecessary psychology. You learn who he is by the way he studies sign, handles fear, and reacts when the trap closes. That directness works well. It gives the series a harsh, outdoors feeling that is different from the wider travel of Fargo or the historical pressure around Sundance.

Because there are only two books, Cutler is easy to try. The Wolf-Pack and The Gun-Hawks make a neat pair, and together they show both sides of the character, the solitary hunter in open country and the hard man dropped into a town already gone wrong. If you like westerns that mix tracking, wilderness danger, and human predators, Cutler is a compact series that gets to the point fast.
