Series background & context
The Cupcake Bakery Mysteries follow Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura, best friends and business partners at Fairy Tale Cupcakes in Scottsdale, Arizona. What starts as a dream bakery quickly turns into a regular date with police tape, suspicious customers, and local events that somehow end in murder.
These books are as much about friendship as they are about crime.
Mel is the steadier, more cautious half of the duo, while Angie brings energy, impulse, and just enough chaos to keep things lively. Around them is a dependable supporting cast, including Tate Harper, who helps keep the business running, Angie's brother Joe DeLaura, who becomes an important part of Mel's life, and bakery staff who make Fairy Tale Cupcakes feel like a real working place instead of just a backdrop.
The Scottsdale setting does a lot of work here. McKinlay uses food festivals, weddings, reunions, pageants, fashion shoots, resort kitchens, holiday events, and neighborhood business life to give each mystery its own flavor. A dead bridezilla in Sprinkle with Murder sets the tone early, and later books keep finding fresh ways to mix frosting with foul play. The crimes can be serious, but the mood stays warm, fast-moving, and funny.
There is also a nice sense of life moving forward across the series. Relationships deepen, the bakery grows, side characters return, and big milestones like engagements and weddings actually matter. That means the books work best in order, especially if you enjoy following the group as a long-running found family.
If you want culinary cozies with strong female friendship, an active small-business setting, and just enough romance to sweeten the mix, this is probably McKinlay's signature series. Start with Sprinkle with Murder and keep going in publication order. Watching Mel, Angie, and the Fairy Tale Cupcakes crew juggle business, love, and one body after another is most of the fun.
