Series background & context

The Bluff Point Romance books are warm, interconnected small-town romances set on the Maine coast. The series opens with About a Dog and builds around friends, neighbors, exes, and the kind of town where everybody knows your history, whether you want them to or not.

Pets are not side decoration here. They are part of the emotional engine.

In these books, dogs, cats, and other inherited or rescued animals are often the reason two people have to keep seeing each other. That gives the series a soft, affectionate tone even when the characters are carrying old hurt. McKinlay uses the animals well, not as cute extras, but as part of what pushes guarded people back toward connection.

Each book focuses on a new couple, but the world is shared. Mackenzie Harris and Gavin Tolliver start things off in About a Dog, Barking Up the Wrong Tree follows Carly DeCusati and James Sinclair, and Every Dog Has His Day shifts to Jessie Connelly and Zachary Caine. Because the cast overlaps, reading in order gives the town a little more depth, but each romance also stands well on its own.

The big appeal is the balance between comfort and tension. These are not glossy, perfect love stories. The characters are often dealing with embarrassment, divorce, broken trust, bad timing, or old mistakes. McKinlay keeps the tone light enough to be inviting, but she still lets the people have real problems.

If you like coastal settings, second chances, strong friend groups, and romances with plenty of animal chaos, Bluff Point is an easy series to settle into. Start with About a Dog if you want the full community arc, and stay for the mix of Maine charm, emotional messiness, and very lovable pets.
