Author bio
Saxon James is an Australian author of queer romance whose stated aim is to make readers smile. Her books follow men falling in love in settings that range from college and sports to small towns and the unsettled period after a marriage ends. Humor, attraction, and the chance to feel understood give those different situations a common center, even when the characters begin with very different ideas about what they need.
James also writes young adult fiction under the name SM James. That distinction separates different parts of her writing while leaving an interest in love and connection across them. Her adult romances make room for sexual attraction as well as affection, and the situations can be messy. A character may know how to manage one part of his life while feeling completely uncertain about dating, friendship, or what to do after a major change.
Friendship is often close to the heart of her fiction.
The Never Just Friends books begin with Just Friends and continue through Fake Friends, Getting Friendly, and Friendly Fire. They offer separate romances within a connected sequence, making the recommended order a way to move through a familiar world rather than a requirement to follow one unfinished couple across every volume. The series titles reflect an interest in relationships whose labels don't always keep pace with what the people involved are starting to feel.
Roommate Arrangement begins the Divorced Men's Club series with Payne, newly divorced and back in his hometown, looking for somewhere affordable to live. Beau offers him a room in exchange for practical help and assistance becoming more successful at dating. Their arrangement gives them reasons to spend time together before either can fully control where that closeness leads. James turns an ordinary problem about housing into a romance about rebuilding a life and allowing someone else into it.
The Husband Hoax takes a different practical bargain as its starting point. Christian needs a convincing date for a family wedding, while Émile needs a husband to meet an inheritance condition. A staged relationship seems useful to both of them until the emotional part becomes harder to treat as an act. The book brings family pressure, chosen connections, and a marriage of convenience into the same story, showing how an apparently efficient solution can uncover needs neither person has neatly explained.
The Dating Disaster places a failed first date beside the discovery that the same two men are about to become roommates. It is another example of James giving her characters repeated opportunities to reconsider an initial impression. Living close to someone makes avoiding him harder, but it also makes small details visible: behavior that seemed merely irritating can acquire another meaning once its context is understood.
Her romances often let affection grow through that daily proximity.
James describes her interests outside writing with the same light tone she brings to her public author pages, mentioning coffee, chocolate, and reading. Her work continues to offer different stages of adulthood as starting points for love, from first independence to a second chance. Readers can choose a series for its setting while expecting personal awkwardness, warmth, and people learning how to make room for one another.
