Series background & context
Eddie Collins is not a detective in polished shoes. He is a Crime Scene Investigator in Leeds, the man who walks into the mess after the screaming stops and starts asking what the room, the body, and the tiny bits everyone else missed are trying to say. He is sarcastic, short-tempered, stubborn, and often a pain to his bosses. He is also very good at his job.
That combination drives the whole series.
These books stay close to the working life of a CSI, which gives them a different feel from a standard detective series. The bodies are only the beginning. Eddie has to read scenes, trace patterns, spot what has been staged, and keep going when everyone around him is tired, angry, or ready to settle for the wrong answer. The forensic side matters here, but it is never dry. It is part of the pressure.
The cases themselves get wide fast. What starts as one death can turn into gang crime, serial violence, old cover-ups, or rot inside the police. Eddie spends a lot of time clashing with authority, especially when he thinks someone higher up wants the easy version of events instead of the true one. DI Tom Benson becomes one of the key recurring presences in the books, sometimes ally, sometimes obstacle, often both in the same conversation.
There is plenty of darkness, but the series is not joyless. Eddie's voice keeps it moving. He is angry, funny in a bleak way, and rarely interested in making people comfortable. That black humour is part of what gives the books their rhythm. It also helps when the stories go to some grim places, which they often do.
The personal side matters too. Eddie's family life, old wounds, awkward loyalties, and private resentments keep working their way back into the job. Books like The Pain of Strangers, Black by Rose, Sword of Damocles, Ledston Luck, The Death of Jessica Ripley, This Side of Death, and Death Warning build a rough, bruised portrait of a man who keeps going even when common sense says he should stop. The shorter entries, including The Lift, The Note, The Lock, The Crew, and Eye Contact, trap him in smaller, nastier problems and show the same character under even tighter pressure.
If you are browsing the Eddie Collins books, it also helps to know that The Third Rule has a slightly different feel from the later novels. It is harsher and more speculative, with a near-future premise about capital punishment, while the later books stay closer to present-day Leeds crime. The link is still Eddie himself: sharp-eyed, cynical, and impossible to ignore.
Expect violence, black humour, messy institutions, and a lead character who is rarely polite about any of it.
