Corine's gift makes her essential to the investigations, but it does not make her invulnerable. Her choices often hurt, and the books let her carry those consequences forward.

Chance is a key part of the emotional story, but the series also develops Corine's friendships, family ties, and ability to make decisions outside other people's expectations. The Southwest setting gives the books a specific atmosphere, from border towns and desert roads to communities shaped by both the ordinary and the uncanny.
