The mystery has the forward motion of a detective story, but Claudia’s home life matters just as much. Family expectations, privacy, and the gap between what people assume and what is true are all part of the pressure.

The Rivals widens the scope. Claudia and her colleagues are no longer simply checking dates for nervous clients. A client’s sudden death and troubling signs around powerful dating companies push the series toward corporate espionage and AI-driven manipulation. Claudia has to work out whom she can trust while navigating her feelings for people close to the case and worrying about the danger moving nearer to her family.

The tone is brisk, dryly funny, and curious about the ways technology changes ordinary behavior. These are mysteries with real stakes, but they also enjoy the pleasures of a clue trail, a suspicious stranger, and a narrator who knows a good detective story when she sees one.
