Author bio
Claudia Carroll grew up in Dublin, in a red-brick family home that has been in the same hands for decades. As a child she loved stories and the bustle of a big, close-knit household, long before she ever thought of herself as a writer.
She studied commerce at University College Dublin, even though everyone around her suspected she was destined for the stage more than spreadsheets. Along the way she trained at the College of Music and the Gaiety School of Acting, and spent evenings in student drama societies whenever she could.
After college she picked up early work on a children's television show and in theatre, then landed what was supposed to be a short gig on the Irish soap Fair City. The part of Nicola Prendergast, the snooty neighbour viewers loved to hate, turned into a fourteen-year run and made her a familiar face in living rooms all over Ireland.
Acting paid the bills, but between scenes she was scribbling away in her dressing room. A fellow actor and novelist encouraged her to show a few chapters to an agent, and those pages became her first book, He Loves Me Not...He Loves Me. It was published in 2004 and quietly marked the start of a second full-time career.
Since then she has written a long run of contemporary novels, most of them set in Ireland and centered on women at turning points in their lives. Readers often start with early favourites like Remind Me Again Why I Need A Man or I Never Fancied Him Anyway, both warm, funny stories about love, friendship and second chances that were quickly picked up for film and television development. Later books such as Me and You dig into darker themes of loyalty and trauma, while still holding on to sharp one-liners and big-hearted endings.
Over time her focus widened from individual romances to whole communities. In the Primrose Square novels she follows several neighbours on the same Dublin square, weaving together grief, reinvention and unexpected friendship behind ordinary front doors. She later adapted The Secrets of Primrose Square for the stage, and recent work like Our Little Secret and Remember, I Love You has moved further into domestic drama and stories of loss, while keeping the pace and humour of her earlier comedies.
Carroll tends to write early in the morning, keeping regular office hours at the kitchen table or in a neighbourhood café. She has spoken often about her love of Jane Austen and old Hollywood romances, and you can feel that influence in her tight plots and talky, sparky dialogue. New York has also crept into her work, most notably in Meet Me In Manhattan, which grew out of her fascination with online dating and catfishing stories.
These days she writes full-time, returning to Fair City only for the occasional guest appearance. She still lives in Dublin, close to her extended family, and often draws on the rhythms of the city, its terraces and small parks, for the settings of her books.
On the page, her stories tend to mix big feelings with small, telling details, whether that is a ruined wedding dress, an empty house on a rainy night or a gossiping neighbour over the garden wall. The result is the kind of fiction that feels easy to read but leaves you thinking about the characters long after you have closed the book.
