City of Ghosts Books in Order

The City of Ghosts series is a historical crime sequence set in Leningrad during the last years of Stalin's rule. Its central figure is Revol Rossel, a militia investigator who was once a promising violinist. His musical career and his life were shattered by the Soviet security apparatus, leaving him with a past he cannot neatly escape.

The first book, City of Ghosts, begins in 1951 with a brutal discovery: five frozen bodies have been arranged on railway tracks outside the city. Rossel is assigned the case, and his search leads from the streets and railway yards of Leningrad into the city's musical world and toward people with connections to the Kremlin. It is a murder mystery, but the investigation is never separate from the pressures of the state.

Rossel is not a carefree detective who can simply follow the evidence. He knows how quickly a person can be denounced, arrested, or made to disappear. That history gives him good reason to be cautious, but it also makes him stubborn when he sees people being used or silenced.

The second novel, A Traitor's Heart, moves forward to the winter of 1952. Rossel is close to death in an Arctic labor camp when Major Nikitin arrives with an offer of release, in exchange for help finding a murderer in Leningrad. Nikitin is no ordinary colleague. He is tied to Rossel's trauma, so their forced partnership gives the case an extra layer of tension from the start.

Across the books, the larger danger is a world built on secrecy and fear. Murders matter, but so do the hidden loyalties, political rivalries, and old wartime crimes that shape who can speak freely. Music also remains part of Rossel's way of seeing the world, giving the investigations an unusual thread without turning them into puzzles for their own sake.

Expect a dark, wintry historical thriller with a strong sense of place. The books work best in order, beginning with City of Ghosts, because Rossel's history and his uneasy connection with Nikitin grow more important as the series continues.
