Series background & context
The Chronicles of the Spanish Civil War is Tricia Goyer's three-book historical series about people caught in the conflict that engulfed Spain before World War II. The novels follow Sophie and a circle of volunteers, reporters, and soldiers as war turns familiar places into dangerous ground.
- A Valley of Betrayal* introduces Sophie, stranded in the Spanish countryside as fascist forces and Spanish patriots fight for control. Routes to safety close around her. After finding refuge with international volunteers, she uses a camera and her artistic skill to try to make the suffering around her visible to the outside world.
In A Shadow of Treason, the bombing of Guernica and a returning reporter pull Sophie into a dangerous intelligence mission. A Whisper of Freedom brings Sophie, Philip, Jose, and Deion to the point where escape from Spain may be their only hope.
War leaves no easy choices here.
Goyer treats the Spanish Civil War as a human story rather than a simple backdrop. The series has romance and suspense, but it is driven by divided loyalties, political uncertainty, sacrifice, and the cost of trying to protect people when every option can carry danger.
Read the books in order: A Valley of Betrayal, A Shadow of Treason, then A Whisper of Freedom. The same characters' journeys build from one novel to the next, and the emotional weight of the later books depends on what they have survived together.
