Series background & context

The Chronicles of Castellane is Cassandra Clare’s epic fantasy series for adult readers, set far from the world of Shadowhunters. The books take place in and around Castellane, a glittering port city where nobles in jeweled palaces and thieves in back alleys are tangled together by politics, religion, and money.

At the center of Sword Catcher is Kel, an orphan taken from the streets and remade as the body double for Prince Conor Aurelian. As the prince’s hidden twin, Kel is trained to fight, speak, and even stand like Conor, always knowing his true purpose is to die in the heir’s place if an assassin’s blade ever finds its mark.

Running alongside Kel’s story is that of Lin Caster, a gifted physician from the Ashkar, a marginalized community confined to a walled district and rumored to be the last people with real magic. Lin’s work takes her into the homes of Castellane’s powerful families and eventually into the orbit of the Ragpicker King, the mysterious ruler of the city’s criminal world.

The sequel, The Ragpicker King, dives deeper into that underworld and the larger politics of the continent. Murders in the city’s Shining Gallery, questions about prophecy and faith, and the threat of war push Kel, Lin, Conor, and the Ragpicker King into uneasy alliances.

These novels trade demon slaying for court intrigue and slow burn conspiracies. They focus on class, power, and the cost of loyalty in a city where every friendship has a price. Readers who enjoy layered worldbuilding, large casts, and morally complicated choices will find plenty to dig into, even if they have never read a Shadowhunter book.
