Series background & context

Christmas, Colorado is Debbie Mason's snow-globe small town series. The setting is a mountain town in Colorado that has fully embraced its name, and the books make the most of it. There are holiday festivals, decorated shop windows, local gossip, and enough town spirit to wear down even the most stubborn outsider. If you like romance where the setting feels as important as the couple, this series knows exactly what it is doing.

The books are connected romances, not one long cliffhanger, so each story focuses on a different couple. The Trouble with Christmas starts with resort developer Madison Lane landing in town after a career mess and colliding with sheriff Gage McBride. From there the series branches out through the people around them, including bakers, soldiers, mayors, actors, doctors, deputies, and lifelong residents who have been circling each other for years. You keep meeting new leads, but the old favorites never disappear for long.

Everybody knows everybody, and nobody stays out of anyone else's love life for long.

That is a big part of the fun. The town regulars watch, interfere, scheme, and occasionally flat-out matchmaking their way through these books. The romances themselves lean heavily on second chances, forced proximity, old crushes, family baggage, and people who need to let go of the story they have been telling themselves about love. One book might center on a husband returning from war with no memory. Another might bring a movie star back to the hometown she never fully escaped. Another might give a longtime crush one last shot to speak up.

Even with all the holiday sparkle, the series is not weightless. Mason gives her characters real hurts to work through, grief, guilt, fear of trust, broken families, public embarrassment, and the kind of old wounds that get sharper when you come home. What keeps the books buoyant is the community around them. Christmas, Colorado is the kind of place where a bakery, a sheriff's office, a local bar, and a town square can all become part of the emotional story.

The tone stays warm, funny, and very readable. There is plenty of banter and plenty of heart, but the books do not rush past the harder parts. If you want holiday romance with a strong sense of place, returning side characters, and couples who have to earn their happy ending, this series is a good place to settle in. It also has a nice extra bit of trivia attached to it, The Trouble with Christmas went on to inspire the Hallmark movie Welcome to Christmas.

Read in order if you can. The romances stand alone, but the town grows richer each time you come back.
