Series background & context
Anne Perry's Christmas Stories are short Victorian mysteries set in the days before Christmas. Each book gives a supporting character from the Pitt or Monk world a chance to lead the action, often far from the regular series detectives and their usual London routines.
They are smaller stories, but not throwaways.
A maid, a relative, a friend, a clergyman, or a traveler may find themselves caught up in a disappearance, a death, a family quarrel, or an old injustice. The setting can be a country village, a house party, a ship, a city neighborhood, or even New York. The crime is usually wrapped up with a moral choice that matters as much as the solution.
Familiar faces appear throughout the run. Lady Vespasia, Gracie, Mariah Ellison, Victor Narraway, and other people from Perry's Victorian novels step forward in different books. That makes the novellas especially enjoyable for readers who like the wider Pitt and Monk casts, but most can also be read on their own.
The mood is gentler than the main series, although the problems can still be serious. Perry uses snow, travel delays, holiday gatherings, church services, and family expectations to create pressure. The stories usually make room for reconciliation or a hopeful new beginning by Christmas morning.
The earliest entry, A Christmas Journey, is a good place to start if you want to read in publication order. A Christmas Visitor, A Christmas Guest, and A Christmas Secret continue the pattern of putting a minor character at the center of a seasonal puzzle. Later titles, including A New York Christmas, A Christmas Resolution, and A Christmas Vanishing, offer the same compact mix of danger, kindness, and period detail.
Read in order for recurring-character context, or simply choose the premise that appeals most. Each novella is designed as a quick, self-contained holiday read, with enough connection to Perry's larger Victorian world to reward longtime fans.
