White Christmas

by Katie Flynn

2021

Series background & context

The White Christmas series brings together three emotionally rich wartime stories that share characters, themes and a strong sense of movement between mainland Europe, London and Liverpool. At the heart of the trilogy are young women uprooted by conflict who must build new lives while carrying the weight of old losses.

White Christmas opens in Frankfurt in 1938, where Jewish teenager Rozalin Sachs is growing up in a cultured, middle‑class family as the Nazi grip tightens. Forced to flee, Roz is separated from her parents and put on a Kindertransport train. On the journey she meets Felix, a boy who quickly becomes her closest ally, and together they make it to England and then to Liverpool, clinging to the idea that their families will follow. When tragedy strikes and Roz is left alone again, she joins the Women’s Land Army on a farm at Hollybank, where hard physical work, new friendships and the attentions of farmer’s son Bernie open up a different kind of future—and a painful choice between past and present love.

Winter’s Orphan jumps to London in 1940 and introduces Libby Gilbert, a city girl who loses everything when bombing and misfortune collide. Left homeless and desperate, she is on the brink of a disastrous decision when a local lad reaches out a hand. His kindness sends her north to Liverpool in search of long‑lost relatives, and on to Hollybank. There, Libby’s story begins to touch the lives of those who once knew Roz, and the farm becomes a crossroads for people who have all, in their own ways, been orphaned by war.

In A Mother’s Secret, Libby is a little more settled in the countryside, but the emotional ground under her feet is less secure than ever. Hoping to be closer to family after her parents’ deaths, she has instead uncovered lies and half‑truths about her late mother’s past. Hollybank and Liverpool offer safety and potential romance, yet Libby cannot move forward until she understands why her mother made the choices she did. Her search for answers forces older relatives to confront the secrets they thought were buried for good.

Together, the three books form a loose trilogy about displacement: refugees from Nazi Germany, Londoners bombed out of their homes, and children who feel unwanted despite having relatives around them. Hollybank farm and Liverpool act as anchors, places where people from very different backgrounds can, with time, find community.

Readers who enjoy layered family mysteries and stories that move between city streets, farms and foreign cities will find plenty to sink into here. While each novel can be read alone, tackling them in order from White Christmas through Winter’s Orphan to A Mother’s Secret gives a satisfying sense of lives intersecting and legacies being worked out over several years.
