Author bio

Debbie Mason writes romances set in places where everybody knows your business, the coffee is hot, and somebody is always nudging two stubborn people toward each other. She is based in Ottawa, Ontario, and she writes contemporary romance as Debbie Mason and historical paranormal romance as Debbie Mazzuca.

Wanting to write came early. In her earlier author bios, Mason credits her grandfather, author Dudley Copland, with encouraging her dream of becoming a published writer. He also passed along a love of Scotland, which ended up shaping her first books in a big way.

That mattered. A 2006 trip to Scotland, and an unexpected detour to the Isle of Skye, gave her the spark for Lord of the Isles, her 2010 debut as Debbie Mazzuca. The Highland setting, local legend, and touch of fantasy became the foundation for her MacLeod novels.

A few years later, she changed direction and changed names on the cover as well.

Under Debbie Mason, she moved into contemporary small-town romance with The Trouble with Christmas in 2013. That book launched the Christmas, Colorado series and later inspired the Hallmark movie Welcome to Christmas. It also helped introduce the style many readers now associate with her, warm communities, funny side characters, family chaos, and love stories that take their time.

Readers who pick up Mason for the first time usually meet her through one of her connected series. In Christmas, Colorado, books like Christmas in July, It Happened at Christmas, and Happy Ever After in Christmas mix holiday sparkle with grief, memory loss, career trouble, and a lot of second chances. In Harmony Harbor, Highland Falls, and Sunshine Bay, she shifts the scenery from snowy mountain streets to coastal towns, inns, bakeries, family restaurants, and neighborhoods where everybody has an opinion.

Those books are a big part of her appeal. Mistletoe Cottage and the Harmony Harbor novels lean into seaside charm, old secrets, and tight family ties. Summer on Honeysuckle Ridge and The Inn on Mirror Lake bring that same emotional pull to a North Carolina mountain town. More recently, Summer on Sunshine Bay, Three Little Wishes, and The Sweet Life show how comfortably she moves between straight romance and more family-centered stories.

Home is one of her favorite plot devices.

The setup changes from book to book, but some things keep showing up for a reason. She likes capable women at turning points, men who need to open up, big family networks, and towns that act like extra characters. Her stories often begin with a return home, a forced reunion, or a messy fresh start, then build toward trust instead of rushing straight to the happy ending. Even when the tone is light, there is usually something tender underneath, grief, divorce, loneliness, or the feeling that a character has to rebuild a life before love can fit into it.

She has also kept one foot in her earlier writing life. As Debbie Mazzuca, her MacLeod paranormal romances received award attention, including a Holt Medallion Award of Merit. As Debbie Mason, she became a USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestselling author with a long list of contemporary romances.

When she is not writing or reading, she enjoys cooking for her family, cuddling with her grandchildren and granddog, and walking in the woods with her husband. That feels fitting for a writer whose books are full of meals, neighbors, family noise, and the quiet hope that home can still surprise you.
