Chloe Mather gives Lawrence Kelter a different kind of lead character. Where Stephanie Chalice is very much a city homicide detective, Chloe is an FBI agent and former Marine, harder edged in some ways, more openly shaped by combat experience, and built for cases that can widen far beyond a single New York crime scene.

From the start, the series signals bigger stakes. Secrets of the Kill opens with the murder of an Israeli woman in New York and quickly expands into a case involving the mob, intelligence work, and the threat of mass violence. Chloe is not written as a detached super-agent. She carries PTSD, a fatherless past, and a rigid moral code, which gives the books some inner friction instead of pure action-movie momentum.

Her world also includes people who keep the stories grounded. Dominic Cabrera, her FBI partner, brings a quick mouth and a strong working rapport. Her home life in Huntington, with Liam and her mother Grace, gives the series a place to breathe when the cases start widening.

The later books keep pushing into larger danger. Rules of the Kill starts with a set of unusually executed victims, and Legends of the Kill turns on a dying man's call that sparks fresh violence and buried trouble. Across the series, the crimes tend to connect organized crime, international pressure, and hidden agendas.

So what should you expect here? Faster geopolitical stakes than Stephanie Chalice, but still with Kelter's taste for dialogue and momentum. Chloe is blunt, battle-tested, and not especially patient with monsters. If you like your crime fiction with FBI weight, moral anger, and a wider field of danger, Chloe Mather is Kelter's lane for that.
