She is smart, very local, very Italian, fiercely tied to family, and fully capable of getting herself into more trouble than a sane person would volunteer for. That combination gives the series both its warmth and its velocity.

The opening book, Man-Killer, does a lot of setup quickly. Gina is working ordinary insurance fraud cases when the theft of her family's prized 1963 Corvette blows everything open. Suddenly she is dealing with mob-connected danger, a corrupt boxer, and Luca Mura, a criminal bad enough to make other bad men uneasy.

What gives the book its extra kick is Gina's world beyond the case file. Her retired-cop father matters. Her sister matters. Sunday dinner matters. So does Rocco Benelli, the handsome, unreliable man she probably knows better than to trust and keeps circling anyway. Kelter uses all of that to keep the tone lively even when the stakes rise.

This is not a cozy mystery, but it is not joyless hard-boiled fiction either. It lives in a sweet spot between wisecracking family crime story and genuine suspense. There are guns, mobsters, and bruising confrontations, but there is also a lot of neighborhood personality.
