Nik Briscoe is built for readers who like drifter heroes, but with a twist. She is a disabled former Navy SEAL, tough, mobile, and already carrying more than enough trouble when the series opens. That makes her less a settled sleuth and more a person who keeps landing in places where the local rot is deeper than it first looks.

In Fat Cat Stew, she is already on the run from a criminal gang for a crime she did not commit. Then things get worse. In the small town of Possum Trot, she is arrested for yet another murder she says she did not commit. From there the book turns into a fight on two fronts, clear her name, and survive long enough to do it before both the town's power structure and the people chasing her close in.

The local villain matters too. Sam Beaulieu is not just one bad man in the background. He represents the way small places can be controlled by money, fear, and habit. That gives the book a different texture from Kelter's New York work. The roads are dustier, the institutions feel smaller, and the corruption is more personal.

Nik herself is the draw. She is capable, but the series does not treat that as magic. She is carrying scars, history, and a dark secret of her own. That gives the action some weight.

So this page is a good stop if you want Kelter outside Brooklyn and in a more wandering vigilante-thriller mode. Nik Briscoe is the sort of character who does not go looking for bad towns, but somehow keeps finding them.
