Series background & context
The Child trilogy begins with a family reunion that should be impossible to mistrust. Thirteen-year-old Gabe returns home after being abducted and missing for three years. His mother, Yvonne, wants the same thing any parent would want, to bring him back into the family and help him recover.
But Gabe has changed.
His return brings relief, grief, and questions that do not have easy answers. Yvonne has to deal with a son shaped by captivity, a husband struggling to understand him, and the growing fear that the boy who came home may not be safe around the people closest to him. The series is interested in the gap between what a mother hopes is true and what she can no longer ignore.
The first book, Danger Child, was also published as The Lost Boy. It sets up Gabe's return and the family pressure that runs through the trilogy. On The Edge and The Model Child continue the story as the past keeps reaching into the present and Yvonne tries to protect her family without fully understanding the threat inside it.
These are domestic psychological thrillers rather than police procedurals. The tension comes from home life, old wounds, uncertain memories, and the uneasy question of whether love can survive when trust is breaking down. Yvonne is the emotional center of the books, but Gabe is the mystery everyone else is forced to live with.
The books are connected to Derek's larger Yvonne Landis universe, which also includes the Cuckoo and Club Nirvana series. Reading the Child books first gives the clearest introduction to Yvonne, Gabe, and the family history that later stories build on.
Expect a dark, uneasy read with family secrets, trauma, and escalating danger. The trilogy works best in order because each book adds context to the choices its characters make.
At its heart, this is a story about a mother trying to save her child while wondering what he may become.
