Series background & context

The Brandy, PI series follows rookie private investigator Brandy Baker as she takes on missing-person cases where the first explanation is rarely the real one. The books were published under J. D. Wilde, a pen name used by Julia Derek, but they fit comfortably beside her other mysteries and thrillers.

Brandy is new to the work, not new to trouble.

The series begins with No More Fear, followed by No Way Out. Each case gives Brandy a chance to build her instincts while dealing with people who are scared, deceptive, or desperate. The tone is investigative and character-driven, with a focus on what happens when an ordinary client brings a problem to a PI who has to decide which details matter.

In No Man's Girl, Brandy is hired to find missing Broadway actress Alina Patrick. Alina's boyfriend believes an understudy may have taken her to steal the lead role, but Brandy soon finds that nearly everyone connected to the disappearance is holding something back. The more she learns, the less simple the missing-person story becomes.

No Love Lost continues Brandy's work as the series builds on its mix of suspense, interpersonal lies, and practical detective work. Brandy is not a superhuman investigator. She has to ask questions, notice when a story changes, and keep going when a client is not telling her everything.

The series is a good fit for readers who enjoy private-eye mysteries with modern settings and manageable, book-by-book cases. There is continuing character development, but the individual investigations give each installment its own focus. Start with No More Fear to watch Brandy find her footing from the beginning.

Expect missing people, unreliable accounts, and cases that become more dangerous as Brandy gets closer to the truth. The books are less about official FBI procedure and more about one investigator learning how to work a case when nobody around her is fully trustworthy.

Brandy's biggest advantage is persistence. Her biggest problem is that persistence tends to put her exactly where the danger is.
